An American Renaissance
Watching Obama as he begins his term has been fascinating.  Everything is hanging in the balance RIGHT NOW for America.  For 2 years we’ve been talking about a need for radical change in the way we do politics and now talk is cheap and it’s time to act. The threat of a return to the status quo in Washington is looming every day  (case in point being Obama’s stimulus package: it...

One hundred years from now...
This was written by my cousin David Hirning: Thoughts on Today One hundred years from now, it won’t make a bit of difference. -James P. Craven (my grandfather, now deceased) Today is a new day. What’s special about today? Maybe you’d say, “Nothing.” Or is there? The average life expectancy of human beings is roughly 75 years, or about 27,400 days. That’s a heck of a lot of...

I was almost on "The Daily Show"
At the Barack Obama/ HBO concert last Sunday, the group I was standing with near the Lincoln Memorial managed to get on TV a bunch of times.  Two of them even made it on “The Daily Show”! I was standing RIGHT next to them during the clip (approx. 2:54) The Daily Show With Jon Stewart So close…yet so far. Here is a shot of the entire group:

leitch: lindsayrobertson: I’m very much enjoying Jessica Pressler’s coverage of epic fail death-faker Marcus Schrenker. The latest: he left all of his plans in the plane. (If he wasn’t already arrested, this would be a perfect case for Encyclopedia Brown.) Seriously, everyone needs to read every story about Marcus Schrenker. He might be my favorite person ever from Indiana.

Excerpts from a post on “Get Mitch or Die Trying”: mmcshane: To celebrate today’s inauguration, here is a piece written for Esquire in 1960 by Norman Mailer…The superficial comparisons between Barack Obama and Kennedy have been frequently made leading up to today, and their are some similarities to be found. But I think the most common link the men share is a sense of...

...And somewhere on the way, you might find out...
Welcome to the Obama-nation, America. “You might not be looking for the promised land, but you might find it anyway. Under one of those old familiar names, like New Orleans, Detroit City, Dallas, Pittsburgh PA, New York City, Kansas City, Atlanta, Chicago and L.A. “ James Brown “Livin’ in America”

Dr. Seuss knows what it's like to be a college...
…You will come to a place where the streets are not marked. Some windows are lighted.  But mostly they’re darked. A place you could sprain both you elbow and chin! Do you dare to stay out?  Do you dare to go in? How much can you lose? How much can you win? And IF you go in, should you turn left or right… or right-and-three-quarters? Or, maybe, not quite? Or go around back and sneak in from...

Early morning inspiration
Tell me not, in mournful numbers, Life is but an empty dream! - For the soul is dead that slumbers, And things are not what they seem. Life is real! Life is earnest! And the grave is not its goal: Dust thou art, to dust returnest, Was not spoken of the soul… - A Psalm of Life

leitch: FROST/NIXON “1. More than anything else, Frost/Nixon is entertaining. This is the time of year when this is somehow meant to be an insult, as in, “Well, I love The Dark Knight, it’s incredibly entertaining … but, you know, it’s not serious.” As if the goal of movies was to be “serious.” (This kind of ridiculousness is how junk like Crash ends up winning Best Picture.) Anyway,...

UofO love from Sunny's "Sweet Dee"
From Stewart Mandel’s “College Football Mailbag”: Personally, I’ve got bigger beefs right now than the BCS. For instance, how the heck did Kaitlin Olson not get a Golden Globe nomination? Seriously — what’s up with that, Kaitlin? Kaitlin: I don’t even want a Golden Globe. Golden Globes are for jerks. That’s not true — I’m pissed. But...

mmcshane: Welcome to my new music blog, or “mulog”. Six months ago I would have made fun of any one of my friends who started a blog, let alone a damn music blog. What’s changed? Repeated requests for me to post music I like, and an abundance of free time. If because of my blog someone discovers a song or group they never would have had exposure to otherwise, my job is done. I thank the both of...

Clint Eastwood: straight shooter
Great quotes from a recent interview in Esquire: As Jerry Fielding used to say, “We’ve come this far, let’s not ruin it by thinking.” I remember going to a huge waterfall on a glacier in Iceland. People were there on a rock-platform overlook to see it. They had their kids. There was a place that wasn’t sealed off, but it had a cable that stopped anybody from...

SUNNIER TIMES IN NEW MAINSTREAM MEDIA By JAY MARIOTTI AOL We all have our career flashpoints. Mine came in China, perhaps triggered by a near-death experience while climbing the Great Wall.
