The changing times in “Mad Men” are similar to today:

Interviewer: …Their media world is changing like ours.

Matthew Weiner (Creator of Mad Men): The Internet is as much a shakeup to advertising as television was. What Duck says about selling airtime and not being responsible to the client for the success of the product – “Why should we be? Why should we guarantee them higher sales? We should just guarantee them that we can get their message in front of eyeballs. The message is not important.”

And of course the message is super-important. The clients are the ones footing the bill and eventually they’ll revolt until they get a campaign that moves their product.
